From Wires to Deals

Founded in 1926, SAE began with a mission to electrify Italy's railways. Over the decades, SAE expanded into international infrastructure projects in the 1950s, merged with SADELMI COGEPI in 1988, and evolved into SAE Capital in 2005 before restructuring in Luxembourg in 2023. Today, SAE is involved in countries all over the world, working with conglomerates and governments on projects in a variety of different sectors.

1926
Founding of SAE
SAE (Società Anonima Elettrificazione) was established in Milan, Italy, by a group of visionaries led by Engineer Alfredo Albani. The primary mission was to electrify Italy’s railway systems, an ambitious goal at a time when railways were predominantly powered by steam. The company’s first major project, the electrification of the Bolzano-Brenner railway line, marked a significant milestone in Italy’s railway history. This project demonstrated SAE’s technical prowess and laid the foundation for its future growth.
1930s
Early Growth and Expansion
Throughout the 1930s, SAE rapidly expanded its capabilities and undertook several key projects that solidified its reputation. Notable projects included the electrification of major railway lines such as Florence-Rome, Leghorn-Grosseto, Milan-Como-Chiasso, and the “Direttissima” Bologna-Florence line. These projects were critical in enhancing Italy’s transportation infrastructure and showcased SAE’s ability to handle large-scale engineering challenges.
1940s
Post-War Reconstruction
The aftermath of World War II presented both challenges and opportunities for SAE. During the war, many infrastructure projects were halted, but the post-war period saw a surge in reconstruction efforts. SAE played a crucial role in rebuilding Italy’s infrastructure, including the construction of a 230 kV transmission line for Montecatini. SAE also established a manufacturing unit in Naples, which significantly contributed to the industrial growth of southern Italy. The company’s efforts were instrumental in Italy’s recovery and set the stage for future expansion.
1950s
Global Expansion Begins
The 1950s marked a pivotal decade for SAE as it expanded its operations internationally. Under the leadership of Engineer Antonio Auriemma, SAE ventured into new markets, undertaking significant projects in countries such as India. In India, SAE was involved in the construction of a 132 kV transmission line for the Machkund Hydroelectric Scheme and the electrification of key railway lines. This decade also saw SAE expanding into Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, and Venezuela, establishing a strong global presence and demonstrating its expertise in diverse geographic and cultural environments.
1960s
Diversification and Innovation
In the 1960s, SAE diversified its activities beyond electrification. The company entered the civil engineering sector, constructing industrial sheds, substations, and large-scale infrastructure projects. A notable achievement was the establishment of a tower testing station in Lecco, which became a benchmark for quality and innovation in transmission tower design and manufacturing. This period also saw SAE investing in research and development, leading to advancements in construction techniques and project management methodologies.
1970s
Continued International Growth
The 1970s were marked by continued international expansion and the successful execution of several high-profile projects. In Iran, SAE constructed high-voltage transmission lines that were crucial for the country’s energy infrastructure. In Brazil and Indonesia, SAE’s projects contributed to the modernization of the energy and transportation sectors. This decade further solidified SAE’s reputation as a reliable partner for large-scale infrastructure projects worldwide.
1980s
Formation of SAE SADELMI
The merger of SAE with SADELMI COGEPI in 1988 was a strategic move that combined the strengths and expertise of both companies. The new entity, SAE SADELMI, was positioned to handle larger and more complex projects globally. This merger brought together SAE’s extensive experience in electrification and SADELMI’s capabilities in civil and industrial engineering. The combined resources and expertise allowed SAE SADELMI to expand its service offerings and enhance its competitive edge in the global market.
1990s
Strategic Focus and Technological Advancements
Throughout the 1990s, SAE SADELMI focused on leveraging technology to improve its services and expand its offerings. The company invested in advanced manufacturing processes and quality control systems, ensuring the highest standards in its projects. Noteworthy projects during this period included the construction of sophisticated transmission networks and the implementation of innovative project management techniques. SAE SADELMI also strengthened its presence in key international markets, further solidifying its position as a leader in infrastructure development.
2000s
New Ownership and Direction
In the early 2000s, SAE came under new ownership, marking a strategic shift toward energy and telecommunications. Rebranded as SAE Capital, the company quickly established itself in European finance, executing some of the largest M&A transactions in the region’s history. This period laid the foundation for SAE’s long-term investment orientation.
2010s
Expansion and Sector Diversification
While energy remained the core business, SAE began diversifying into new areas — launching activities in financial services and real estate. The decade also saw continued investment in infrastructure and selective acquisition of strategic assets to broaden the group’s capabilities.
2020s
Restructuring and Rebranding
In 2023, SAE restructured under a Luxembourg-based holding, enabling more efficient governance and capital allocation. The move supported diversification beyond energy, real estate, and financial services into security, sustainability, and media — formalizing a multi-sector investment strategy under the SAE brand.
